Immature. A tad smaller than RBGU. All black bill. Head white except barely visible dark spot on auriculars. Broad dark gray collar on upper back. Underparts white. Mantle medium gray with dark brown bar on wings (when seated on water). In flight, largely blackish primaries and dark on upper wing coverts formed M that did not cross back. Innermost primaries and secondaries whitish contrasting with the gray of the upper wing secondary coverts. Tail slightly notched with narrow black terminal band
