Lesser Black-backed Gull

Large gull with large bill, overall dark brown with white mottling. The outer primaries were nearly black as was the wing margin. The rump was light (mottled white) with dark tail feathers. Thinking this is a first winter bird. Seen flying over Pools 1A and 1C near the public restrooms.

Seen well in flight. Small heron with brown back and white belly. The neck was reddish brown with a ventral white stripe from chin to breast. No question about ID. The bird flushed from Pool 2 (north side of the inlet road that runs east-west toward the headquarters bldg) near the first footbridge that leads north into the march (pool 2) and flew across the road into the area 31 (Pool 5)
