This Spizella sparrow got my attention because it was smaller than the many Savannah Sparrows (SAVS) and Lark Sparrows on the fence line. This sparrow showed a "clean" unspotted breast; the pale lores eliminate Chipping Sparrow (CHSP); distinct white median crown striped in several photos (not all shown here) suggests the bird is not a Brewer's Sparrow (BRSP); very little white around the eye and a strong lateral throat stripes point to CCSP.

Compare with the BRSP photos (by Chris Conard and Dan Kopp) from nearly the same location six days earlier which clearly show the lack of a white median crown stripe and considerable white around the eye: https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31432262

This is an exact count of the ones I identified, but likely an under representation of the actual number present. At one point in time were were 45 on the fence with another 24 on the power line and in the field, although I likely missed hidden in the grass of the field.

In many sparrow species, the symmetrically molting tail feathers would suggest an adult (AHY) bird. In Lark Sparrows (LASP), however, some 44% of hatch-year (HY) birds molt all of their tails in the fall during the pre-formative molt (Pyle 1997). Thus in this case, the molting tail does not give us age information.
