  1. Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird

    Number observed: 1

Comments: male, observed briefly but fairly well for a period of around 5-6 seconds (10 at most). Stopped at Central Grove Provincial Park (picnic area) en route to Brier Island. We parked in the designated parking area at the top of the hill and we were only outside the vehicle for a moment when we saw this hummingbird fly over low over the car, do a semi-circuit of the gravel parking area and then fly to the top of a spruce leader on a 4-5 m spruce just behind a storage shed, about 15 m from the observers. Fully expecting it to be a Ruby-throated, when I put my Zeiss 8x42 bins on it I was stunned to see that it was an apparent Rufous. It was facing me and I could see the rusty-brown flanks, cheeks and crown contrasting with a white upper breast, creating the impression of a collar. The gorget appeared orange-red. It perched only very briefly and then flew up over the trees to the north. I cannot say that I noted the colour of the back, as when perched the bird was facing me and when in flight it was too fast, so Allen's cannot be ruled out as a possibility absolutely, though that species would seem even less likely. [Originally submitted as Rufous and revised to Rufous/Allen's on 12 Dec 2016]
