Large female tanager; bill long and stout - much larger than a Scarlet Tanager's - and body larger and heavier than Scarlet Tanager's as well. Color uniform greenish yellow, and this includes wings and tail, which did not differ markedly in color from the rest of the bird.

A female; seen twice and at close range by several individuals. Relative to the nearby Orchard and Baltimore Orioles, this individual had a short conical bill and a larger body with a shorter tail. Head, nape, rump, and underside were all yellow and without orange or green shades. The wings and tail were of a darker grayish color, and the bird showed two prominent, pale white wing bars. The dorsal side was also well seen and showed a dark gray back contrasting sharply with the yellow nape and rump.
