  9. Brewster's Warbler (hybrid)

    Number observed: 1

Comments: Banded a Spring adult, first year! So amazing to see this rare hybrid up close!! My theory is that this birds parents are a Brewster's Warbler and a Blue-winged Warbler (making this bird a backcross hybrid) because of the yellow/white on the chest and black eye stripe. Other features worth noting are the gold wing bars and greenish/gray back. Since this female Brewster's and a male Blue-winged were caught in the same net at the same time, we think they have a nest in the area. Also interesting is the size comparison of these birds, the Brewster's was significantly smaller than the Blue-winged, yet they were almost the same weight. We think she was possibly starting an egg. This is the first hybrid warbler I have ever seen, and one of the best bird banding days ever!!!
