Maine Audubon's Weekly Bird Walk - rainy at start so no participants. Still walked the West Meadow, spending more time scanning the river and checking waterfowl/gulls than usual. Tide was low but coming in quickly.

Mallard x American Black Duck (hybrid)

presumably more in the large ABDU group along the river but this one was close enough to positively ID

3

quick fly-bys with some ABDUs, too fast to see ssp.

1
dabbling duck sp.

unsure of ID, possible just a ABDUxMALL hybrid but the bird was weirdly GADW-like. Dark brown body with paler head and neck were fine for ABDU but when swimming there was a small spot white in the secondaries, at one point the bird was preening and the white was only visible on the tips of the inner secondaries, not forming a row across all the secondaries like I expect when MALL is involved. No visible white on the greater coverts. The head was suspiciously squared off (like GADW) with a heavily sloped forehead; not typical of MALL or ABDU. The bill also appeared misshaped - thinner based seeming more teal-like than MALL/ABDU.

Given the white in the secondaries was mostly at the tips, rather than the entire feather and most of the other (very slight) abnormalities could have been sexual variation I'd rather chalk this up as an unknown Anas sp than try to put a label on it.

surprised to see the drop since last week. the cold (and snow) early this week might have forced these birds away
