Barrow's Goldeneye

was an adult female In the company of Common Goldeneyes on Kern River 100-150 meters/yards below west end of Lake Ming. All yellow bill (I could not see a black tip), head darker than Common Goldeneye females. Barrow's more chocolate colored, Commons more reddish brown, Barrow's head not rounded like Commons, rather Barrow's was more squarish looking (more flat on top, front, and back) which also made its head look much bigger than the accompanying Commons. Commons heads rounded down to bill, Barrow's forehead head came straight down to bill (no rounded shape). When the Barrow's swam next to a Common the differences in head color and shape showed even more dramatically. Light conditions were excellent as the sun was coming over my shoulder from behind then down toward the goldeneyes. Length of observation was 5 minutes or more before the birds flushed and flew up river.
