Surf Scoter

Located in very shallow water near the spillway and feeding much in the manner of the numerous American Coots that seem to be always there. Slightly larger than a coot and a duller charcoal color to the body feathers than the coots. This female showed a black bill, pale vertical patch at the base of the bill, somewhat round gray-white patch behind and slightly below the eye and a large bright white patch on the back of the head. No vocals. The bird had apparently been reported to the Visitor Center earlier in the day. I checked the area again at different times over the next few days and had no sightings. Photographs of the bird were taken and are available for the asking.....Dave Cleary
