Objective was a coordinated count of Rusty blackbirds at evening gathering from three locations within Lynnfield Marsh IBA (railbed island and two locations at the Partridge Island Boardwalk islands). Blackbird totals are sum of stationary observations made from railbed island (Ann Taylor and I) and two locations on the Partridge Island boardwalks: first platform (Linda Ireland) and boardwalk between islands (Carol Foss). Observations for all other species are from party of 2 (Ann Taylor and me) from St. Paul's church to railbed island. Distance entered reflects distance walked to railbed island (0.55 mi) and distance walked to Partridge Island boardwalk between islands (0.3 mi), however additional species noted are only those I observed to and from railbed island.

Comments: RUBL flying in mostly from ~NW, gathering in trees, calling constantly (kerglee and squiggle), then settling into the marsh for the night;180 in trees at railbed island (200 blackbirds, 90% RUBL; 7:05-7:10pm)+200 in trees at Partridge Island observed from Partridge Island boardwalk platform (Linda Ireland) +186 in trees at Partridge Island observed from Partridge Island boardwalk between islands (Carol Foss)+50 at railbed from direction of Lynnfield GC (7:22 pm). Timing of birds departing Partridge coincided with new arrivals and flyovers at the railbed island (7:10-7:20) and provide confirmation (~ 8 flights of 30-50 RUBL). Total likely an undercount: Trees further downstream of flow of blackbirds (end of Elizabeth Way) were also loaded w/blackbirds at this time and those birds are not counted. Appearance of trees on railbed during careful counts of 200 birds later during migration suggest my estimates for this night were low.
