1

Small alcid next to boat. Heard murrelet call, looked down and saw murrelet with black above (on back, crown and nape). Although I was looking down from the observation bridge, the bird moved its head to an angle where I could see whie on the face, cheek and side of neck, as well as a clear view of a partial white crescent in front of the eye. At the time, this bird was considered a subspecies of Xantus's Murrelet. I have seen this species once before, on a pelagic off of Westport, WA.

1

Out of season sighting. Small alcid, close to boat. From above, gray back, black head with white feathers on top of head from eyes back. Single observer sighting. As a pelagic guide, I am familiar with the Pacific alcids.
