trip to look for reported Eared Grebes

Observations

  1. Number observed: 2

Comments: One Eared Grebe was reported on a rare bird alert at the Dulles Airport pond. After searching for awhile, and circling around to the north side, we were able to find it. Then, we were surprised to find another! Soon Dave Abbott came by, who had found the grebe yesterday, and confirmed both grebes. He noted some of the finer points of identification, such as the more peaked shape of the Eared Grebe, and noted that in September the Eared is much more common than the Horned in our area. We were fortunate to see both from close range in the scope.
