These were viewed with a scope from the southwest side of the lake toward the marina area. Viewing was hampered somewhat by heat distortion; however, watching the two birds, joining each other, allowed me to see the bill size and color (gray-yellow) and a bit of rufous on the lower sides of the neck and other plumage patterns and make them to be frist winter Red-necked grebes. I was able to watch one preen a bit and flex and stretch its wings, allowing me to see the white on the edge of the forewing and the white secondaries.
