birdathon highlights

  1. Number observed: 4
  2. Chimney/Vaux's Swift

    Number observed: 1

Comments: Late in the day (ca. 7 PM), it was foraging pretty low with a mixed batch of Cliff, N Rough-winged, and Barn Swallows behind the south end of the dam. It was definitely a Chaetura swift; before disappearing over the cottonwoods, it made 3 passes right overhead where I got good looks at it. I could clearly see that it had a slightly paler throat and upper chest blending into the dark underparts, but not the crisp black and white of a White-throated Swift. It was also smaller than a WTSW and lacked the longer tail and more swept back wings they have. Since the bird was foraging with swallows, I got a good sense of its size, and it seemed like it was about the same size as the swallows. Most likely a Chimney Swift, since I think I would have noticed if it was significantly smaller than the swallows, as a Vaux’s would have been.

Comments: Also had 4 WIPHs on the pond 2 days ago, plus before dawn today. Lengthy stopover during the winds?
