Appeared to be a first summer bird. Smaller and less bulky than COLO. Mostly dark back and sides, no white in the flanks. White face, front sides of neck and breast with faint beginnings of a chin strap. Back of neck soft gray. Top of head and forehead darker than nape. Observed in good light on flat water, no wind, at distance, for about 5 minutes while it was feeding. The bird then took off and circled the lake for at least 7 or 8 minutes giving good views in flight as well. I eventually tired of tracking it in flight and don't know if it returned to the lake or headed away from the lake.
