1
Thick-billed Murre

A distinctive looking Murre sitting on the water a few hundred yards out on the channel side of the jetty. Mostly sitting and swimming but also diving and preening. Very black (flat black) above and very white below. Black hooded with no white in the face, small amount of white flecked with black under the chin. Blocky, squarish head with short stout bill. Strong white "V" on breast extending into neck, seen well when rising up facing forward and flapping wings (2x). Some faint, narrow dark diagonal lines on flank noted at least one time (may have been artifact of feather arrangement +/- glare or shadow). Seen over long period of observation (15 MIN +) but swell conditions resulted in numerous though relatively brief views. Complete description and report submitted to WA records committee for review. Final acceptance will depend on results of review.
