first summer; medium-sized gull (slightly larger than Frankies, comparable to ring-billed gulls) on same shore as other gulls but tending to stay off to the side rather than mingling; entire head patchy dark gray with faint eye arcs; very long, black bill with appearance of drooping at tip; dark gray back; no white tips apparent on folded black primaries; significant patches of dark color on underwing visible when bird flew; observed with scope at range 200 feet; low-quality photos obtained
