First sighted from trail boardwalk that is just north/east of the Coast Guard tower at the tip of Tawas Point. The bird was South East of this point about 100 yards (estimate).
I then walked 50 yards (estimate) closer to the bird
Goose like bird.
All black head, bill, neck, and breast. From the closer observation point, I noticed a very thin white necklace. The necklace was not always visible.
Grey belly and sides.
Black legs.
Black primaries, White under-tail coverts.
Dark back.
Bill was short but not as stubby as a Cackling Goose.
Based on the necklace the bird was a juvenile or 1st summer bird.
The bird appeared similar in size but slightly larger than the Herring Gulls that were nearby on the sand bar. The bird was smaller than a typical Canada Goose.
When I first saw the bird it was standing on a sand bar out in Lake Huron. There was a piece of green thin leaved 'sea weed' on the sand. The bird would pick up the sea weed, chew it for a few seconds, then drop the sea weed. It repeated this 3-4 times.
The bird moved to the back side of the sand bar and only the head was visible for a short period of time.
I left the area and when I came back about 4:45 the bird was swimming in the area between the beach and the sand bar.
