HISTORICAL RECORD - This was the first documented/verified record of this species for Pinellas County. It was found and photographed by Robert Hawkins, who wasn't sure of its identity until after he saw it again the next day and photographed it. It was seen along the shoreline of the little lagoon behind the North Beach Concessions building. Many people were on hand the third morning, at daybreak, but the bird was not re-located.
A 2nd documented record for Pinellas was one found 3-4 Aug 2007 (Judy Fisher et al.) in a rain-filled puddle in the field next to ValPak, along 28th Street North in north St. Petersburg.
Three prior reports of this species occurred in Pinellas County, but were without a documented photo or specimen. The dates/location - at Pinellas Point Feb 1960; at Fort De Soto Park 10 Oct 1973; and at Honeymoon Island State Park 26 Jun 1985.
