A rare, medium-sized bird of mid-montane forest canopy. Male has dark head, rufous back, wings and tail with bright yellow rump and underparts up to the throat. Above the bill is a greenish wattle that extends to the base of the bill. Female is similar to the male but duller with some streaking on the breast and lacks the bill wattle. Adults unmistakable. Juvenile pale brown underparts with streaking, resembling Streaked Bowerbird, but doesn’t quite meet the range and is smaller. Voice, a series of harsh, grating notes.
