Identification
Sparrow-sized bird of disturbed habitats; common in coastal areas and along lower reaches of large rivers. Males separated from other black-and-white seedeaters by white throat and collar imparting cowled appearance; females by distinctive thick, black bill. Feeds mainly on grass seeds and usually found in overgrown weedy areas including river edges and urban habitats.
