Many different subspecies occur with significant variation in plumage tones, but all have a white collar, an olive-brown back, a yellow eyering, and a streaked throat. Subspecies vary in the color of the belly (brown or pale) and flanks (presence or absence of orange). The song is also quite variable among subspecies.
