Female is similar but with thinner brow and earthy brown upperparts. Breeds in dense forests, edges, and secondary growth at high elevations (1000-3400 m), descending to foothills during the winter. The subspecies in Taiwan (formosana) is sometimes considered a distinct endemic species, Taiwan Bush-Robin.
