Huge white bird with long neck and black bill. Immatures dusky gray-brown with pink on bill. Unlike Trumpeter Swan, adult Tundra usually shows a small yellow spot near the base of the bill. Otherwise extremely similar to Trumpeter, but note subtle features of face: the facial skin is narrower where it meets the eye, making the eye more apparent, and the border between white face and black bill is smoothly curved (straighter on Trumpeter). From head-on, the border of bill and forehead is straight or rounded (pointed in Trumpeter). Breeds on ponds and tundra in far north. Winters in large flocks on fresh or saltwater. Forages in shallow, vegetated wetlands reaching under the water for plants, and walks through corn stubble.
