Small ‘generic’ flycatcher of forest edge and open woodland in tropical lowlands. Behavior is much like that of the wood-pewees in North America: usually perches on a fairly prominent and conspicuous twig or branch and sallies out for insects, returning to the same perch, often calling as it lands, and sometimes ‘shivering’ its tail. Does not flick its wings and tail like flycatchers in the genus Empidonax. Eastern and Western Wood-Pewees occur as spring and fall migrants in the range of Tropical, but have longer wings that extend farther down the tail on a perched bird, and different calls.
