Small and distinctive bunting, usually seen moving around quietly in thick undergrowth. Warm rusty brown with a black-and-white striped head. Bold head pattern resembles that of Yellow-browed and Rustic Buntings but lacks both the bright yellow in the brow of the former and the crest of the latter. Breeds in forests with dense undergrowth, particularly hill forests. Winters in brushy forest environments.

Escapee: Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.
