Common and widespread swallow that is found in a variety of open habitats like fields and wetlands. Adults are iridescent blue-green above (dark in poor light) and bright white below; immatures are duller. They forage on the wing for insects, often giving cheery gurgling calls. Nests in cavities, especially bluebird boxes.
