Large duck; similar in size to a Mallard with a powerful bill. Breeding males are black with white forehead, nape and colorful bill. Females and first-year males have dark brown body and white patches on the cheek. Dives to reach mussels and other aquatic invertebrates. Often seen in harbors, bays and coastal habitats, sometimes in large flocks.
