Large-billed, chunky sparrow of Chaco thorn forest north of central Argentina. Distinctive in range. Prefers thick thorn forest. Generally solitary or in pairs, near the ground or in low vegetation or on wire fences. Large bill and rufous cap distinctive in range. Song a high flat series of whistles: one slightly descending whistle, followed by 6-7 upslurred whistles.
