Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Short-tailed antshrike of rainforest canopy. Looks top heavy because of its short tail, chunky build, and heavy bill. Males are slaty gray; females are olive-brown above and tawny below. Both sexes have small white or cream wing spots. Forages higher than most other antshrikes, from the midstory to the canopy, singly or in pairs and frequently with mixed-species flocks. Found mostly in the interior of mature rainforest. Listen for the male’s song, a short trill followed by a whistled “peer.”
