Identification

A large, heavy-bodied gull with a thick bill and rounded head. Adults have a dark gray mantle and a broad white trailing edge on the wings that is most noticeable at rest. The outer primaries are black toward the end with white tips. Bright pink legs in adults, duller in younger birds. First-year birds have heavy dark streaks all over, sometimes with a pale head. Found in the Western North Pacific.
