Larger and proportionally heavier-bodied than Laysan and Black-footed Albatrosses. Plumage uniformly dark brown in juveniles, becoming whiter with age. Adults have a gold-colored head. All ages have a distinctive pink bill. Very rare in Hawaii. A few birds visit several of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands; has bred on Midway. May follow ships at sea.
