This black-and-yellow oriole prefers areas where yuccas are plentiful, often on steep hillsides. Males have a black back, head, and breast, and a yellow bellyand shoulder. Wings are black with a white wingbar and yellow shoulder patch on adult males. Females are duller with mottled greenish-gray head and back, often retaining some black on breast and throat. Young birds quite dull with streaks on the back. Listen for its whistled song, a rather fast series of clear notes. Feeds on insects, nectar, and fruit.
