A “classic” Celeus woodpecker; medium-sized and rufous overall with a shaggy crest. Widespread across western Amazonia. Note black barring on upperparts and scaling pattern on underparts. Sexes are similar, but males have a red mustache. Very similar to Waved Woodpecker but little range overlap. Take care to separate from the largely unmarked Chestnut Woodpecker, which overlaps extensively in range. Occurs singly or in pairs in mature lowland forest.
