A usually shy and retiring summer migrant to vast mature taiga forests, especially ancient mossy spruce forests with lots of dead trees. Males beautiful and unmistakable; females and juveniles more subdued but still have the rufous flanks and blue tail. Can be hyperactive, moving quickly across the forest floor, stopping to shimmer the tail downwards. Feeds on insects and berries (autumn).
