Identification

Smaller than most gulls, but large for a shearwater with proportionally longer wings. Found only in the Pacific. Brown above with a white belly and smudgy brown sides and underwings. Brown head with slightly paler throat. Dark-tipped pink bill and pink feet difficult to see unless close. Occasionally seen from land, but prefers to stay offshore. Relatively slow wingbeats compared with other shearwaters. Flies low to the water.
