Hefty, large duck that has wild and domestic types. Domestic types are regularly found walking along the ground in parks, farms, and populated areas. Wild birds tend to be shy and seen in flight in more remote areas with water. Wild birds are dark iridescent green with bold white wing patches and fewer red warts around the eye. Plumage varies in domestic types from all white to all black. Wild birds are rare in the U.S. and are only known from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Throughout Central and South America are widespread but scarce. Nests in tree cavities, holes in banks, and nest boxes where available.
