A remarkably patterned quail, uncommon and difficult to spot as it runs through open grassy woodlands in dry regions. Males look like they are wearing a boldly patterned black-and-white football helmet. Male has a brown, black, and buffy streaked and barred back and a black breast with white spots. Female is finely marked with shades of tan and brown. Between bursts of running, it often crouches motionless and is nearly invisible. Rarely flies unless flushed at very close range. Most often seen crossing a road or trail. Male song is a rich descending whistle with unique ethereal tones and spaceshiplike qualities.
