A social woodpecker with unique color pattern: dark glossy-green back, red face, gray collar, and pink wash on belly. Looks dark at a distance and sometimes crowlike. Sexes alike; juveniles much duller and browner than adults. Found in open woodland, sometimes close to human settlements; uses telephone poles to stash acorns. Usually seen in small family groups.
