Identification

Large nightjar of beaches and water’s edge vegetation in tropical lowlands. Sandy brown with indistinct light markings and a fairly long tail. No collar or white wing patch as seen in other nightjars, but note that males show white outer tail feathers in flight. Roosts during the day in vegetation along the edges of oxbow lakes and rivers and forages around beaches at night. Does not call often, but occasionally gives soft chirping calls in flight.
