Burly bird with a dark and heavy bill. Gray above and pale whitish below. Smudgy dark patch around the eye is present on both sexes, but more prominent on males. Females can have faint barring on the underparts, and average paler overall. Sunda Cuckooshrike is darker, with a gray belly and darker mask. Like other large cuckooshrikes, often perches up prominently in bare trees, hawking for insects from exposed perches. Typically singly, or in pairs or small loose groups. Regularly flicks wings. Quite vocal, often giving a loud, rippling “wheeEEIR!”, as well as a squeaky “whee’yiiIIP!”
