Identification
Medium-sized, beautifully-patterned francolin. Shows small rufous patches in the wings in flight. Found on the ground in open habitats including fynbos, karoo, and grassland. Fairly shy and retiring. Usually seen in small groups. Call is a loud, ringing, up-and-down series of “chow” and “keek” notes. Similar to Red-winged, Shelley’s, and Orange River Francolins, but shows a speckled throat. Has very little overlap in range with Shelley’s and Orange River Francolins.
