Identification

Distinctive medium-sized woodpecker with dark green wings, gray face, and deep green-gray underparts. Both sexes have a thin black moustache; only males have a small red forehead patch. Inhabits montane forests (above 1000 m), where usually seen singly or in pairs. Most commonly heard calls a sharp, high-pitched “pik” and a descending series of whistled notes that speeds up, then slows.
