Small wader with a gray back and white underparts. Breeding males develop a reddish breast, extending to the forehead and back of the neck. Female and non-breeding birds lack reddish. Often confused with Lesser Sand-Plover, but can be distinguished by its larger size and heavier and longer bill; difficult to judge unless both species are present.
