Identification

Rich caramel-colored duck; long legs and neck give it a goose-like appearance. Body size much smaller than Mallard. Usually found in flocks; prefers marshes, marshy ponds, and flooded rice fields. Juvenile has contrasting dark wings and light belly. Vocal; frequently gives descending whistled calls with a stuttered beginning. Males sound wheezier, females more nasal and squeaky.
