Common duck of wetlands throughout Eurasia, generally in lakes and marshes. Also grazes in flocks on land. Male shows rufous head with buffy forehead, pearly gray body, and pinkish breast. Female has a speckled brown head, rusty flanks, and a brown back. Female is very difficult to distinguish from American Wigeon where the two occur together; look for generally warmer brown with little contrast between head, breast, and flanks on Eursian Wigeon. Also look for dirty grayish, not bright white, underwings in flight, though this can be difficult to judge from a distance.
