Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Widespread and common in Eurasia; generally in lakes and marshes. Male shows rufous head with buffy forehead, pearly gray body, and pinkish breast. Female very difficult to distinguish from American Wigeon; generally warmer brown with little contrast between head, breast, and flanks. Look for dirty grayish, not bright white, underwings in flight, but this can be difficult to judge, especially at a distance.
