Identification

Large, striking, long-tailed sparrow of the eastern U.S. and Canada. Females are browner than jet-black males. White in the wing is limited to one small patch at the base of the primaries. Forages primarily by hopping along ground, scraping away leaf litter. Inhabits scrubby areas and forest edges with thickets. Males sing from atop shrubs and low trees. Visits feeders.
