Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A small, widespread, and cute little barbet with streaked underparts and a well-patterned black, red, and yellow face. It has a red forehead, yellow around the eye, and a black eyestripe all bordered at the rear of the crown by a black band. Note the yellow throat and upper chest bisected with a red patch. The female is duller than the male and has some yellow in the the narrower red breast patch. Immature lacks all red and has faint streaking on the throat. Its song is a ventriloquistic, far-reaching “kuk-kuk-kuk,” delivered as a series at a slightly slower rate than the Malabar Barbet, and is repeated 50-100 times at a stretch. Prefers more open woodlands and avoids wet forests.
