Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Uncommon to fairly common summer migrant to warmer regions, from winter grounds in Africa. Favors open country, usually near water, from dry fields to grassy wetlands with muddy shorelines. Inconspicuous on the ground: gray-brown overall with short legs and very long wings producing long horizontal aspect. Feeds mainly in flight, sweeping back and forth like a giant swallow to snatch aerial insects; in flight note narrow white trailing edge to wings, dark rusty underwings.
